What is Scratch Jr?

Scratch Jr is a fun, simple way for young children (ages 5 to 7) to learn the basics of computer programming. Instead of typing code, kids snap together colorful blocks to make characters move, tell stories, and create games. It’s like digital building blocks that help children learn how to think logically and solve problems — all while being creative and having fun!

In this course, your child will use the Scratch Jr app on a tablet to create their own interactive stories and mini games. They will animate characters, add sounds, and even personalize their projects with drawings and photos. This hands-on learning experience helps build creativity, early coding skills, and confidence with technology.

· Basics of Block-Based Programming: Using visual blocks to create simple commands. · Making Interactive Stories and Games: Bringing ideas to life by controlling characters and scenes. · Problem Solving and Logical Thinking: Learning how to plan and organize steps to reach a goal. · Creative Customization: Designing characters and backgrounds with drawing and photo tools. · Digital Storytelling: Expressing ideas through fun, animated projects.

· Tablet Device: A tablet or laptop is required to run the Scratch Jr app. · Scratch Jr App: Available on the Apple iOS App Store or Google Play Store.

· Fully Charged Device: Bring the tablet with a charger to class.

All classes are conducted online via Zoom. Students can join from anywhere with an internet connection.Please download and install Zoom before your first class.

We recommend using two devices (computers or iPads):One for joining the Zoom class and viewing the teacher’s presentation.The other for participating in hands-on activities.

The course uses ScratchJr as the programming software. For iPad users: Open the App Store, search for “ScratchJr”, and download the app. For web users: Open Google Chrome and visit https://codejr.org/scratchjr/index.html
